About the Institute

The Mediterranean Institute for Regional Studies (MIRS) is a non-governmental academic organization dedicated to researching public policy. It views itself as a vital contributor to the study of energy security, economic and political infrastructure, and regional matters. The institute engages in assessments, consultations, and actively participates in global dialogues concerning energy resources, regional security, stability, peacebuilding, and human security. Our policy areas are articulated in three languages: English, Arabic, and Kurdish, accessible on the official website (www.mirs.co).

MIRS attained official registration with the Kurdistan Regional Government on October 3, 2016, subsequently establishing an office in the Kurdistan Region. Furthermore, the institute achieved official registration with the General Secretariat for the Council of Ministers (Iraqi Government) in December 2023.
Over the years, MIRS has organized numerous seminars and conferences, publishing hundreds of research and policy papers within our specified domains. The institute's publications have evolved into a reputable resource for students, researchers, and media agencies alike.

The message of the founder and head of the Institute

The Mediterranean basin is the intersection point of three main continents: Asia, Europe, and Africa. The basin has recently attracted the attention of multinational companies, media agencies, and tensions among regional powers. The hydrocarbon revelry and natural gas exports in the eastern Mediterranean might bring a new geopolitical change. In addition, the East Mediterranean has a massive role in the international political economy due to the transportation of oil and natural gas from the Middle East to Europe. The accumulated problems in the region, such as climate change and pollution, the Migrant crisis, the unresolved Cyprus problem, the Syrian civil war crisis, Israeli-Palestine conflicts, Turkey's behaviors with the surrounding countries, renewable energy, the role of multinational corporations, the future of the Eastern Mediterranean Gas Forum (EMGF), and so on, are parts of our focus. Despite all of these, the deformation role of the state in Iraq and then the Kurdistan Region as a stable corner of Iraq, as well as economic diversity and political stability in our conferences and assessment papers, are considered a priority. All of these sensitive and strategic issues are included in the "Mediterranean Institute for Regional Studies" work, both impartially and scientifically.

Let us not forget that oil, natural gas, water resources, and environmental protection are common ground for all.

Our institute aims to enhance local human resources and is eyeing becoming an accredited global agency. The other side of research centers as non-state actors is strengthening coexistence mechanisms and creating a favorable atmosphere for dialogue and rapprochement between the conflicting parties.
